Posters

Making posters is something I really enjoy doing. I've created posters professionally before for a make-up company, a beauty salon event night and for a Strictly Come Dancing make-up event night, so I already have a bit of knowledge, and feel that I can produce good quality posters in a short amount of time.

For this particular poster series, we were told to create a movie poster. I decided to choose the movie 'Dreamgirls'. I chose this for a number of reasons: 1.) It's one of my favourite films, 2.) It has a musical element, 3.) It's based on Motown music - one of my favourite genre's and era's of all time.

A little bit about the movie: It's set in the 1960's/1970's and is primarily based on the life of Diana Ross and The Supremes. As part of my research, I looked at a few Motown records and posters and got some great inspiration for my designs:

I particularly liked the image in the top right, so decided to download some 'retro' fonts from DaFont.com and keep the same kind of style with the poster. The words I chose were lyrics from the song 'Dream Girls' on the 'Dreamgirls' soundtrack.

I also really liked the style of The Temptaions' record covers for 'Back To Front' and 'Reflections', so decided to live trace an iconic image of the main cast of Dreamgirls and place onto a plain and simple background. I quite like the simplicity of this poster as it gives the same kind of effect as The Supremes' concert poster for the Lincoln Center.

I stuck with this same image, and decided to add a bit more text. For the title, I decided to place it diagonally across the bottom of the page, cutting off the bottom of the characters' bodies. Again, I got this inspiration from one of The Temptations' covers, and I really liked the way it looked.

I'm happy with the way these posters turned out. I enjoyed using different software and particularly getting to know Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop a little better. In future, I'll be using Adobe Illustrator in particular a lot more than I have done before. By finding tutorials online and simply trying and testing all of the different tools, I was able to become quite familiar with it and enjoy using it after a while.
